I had a thought.

Founders celebrate retention. DAU (Daily Active Users) goes up. Users come back.

Streaks, notifications, weekly recaps. The whole roadmap quietly bends toward bringing them back.

But take Hue. I set it up once and haven't opened the app in months.

The lights come on at sunset. The bedroom dims at night.

That's not failure. That's the product working.

Same story with my calendar and task manager. I let Claude add events and tasks for me now.

I open both less than ever. And I love them more, not less.

The data is mine. The structure is mine. The interface, when I do open it, still fits exactly how I work.

The product never got worse. It just stopped being where I spent my time.

If I were the founder, my dashboard would tell me I'm slipping. Lower opens. A user drifting away.

But I'm more loyal than ever.

A returning user came back for a reason. Sometimes that reason is love. Sometimes it's friction.

The lights didn't sync. The routine broke. The bulb dropped off the network.

They came back because they had to.

We count the visit and call it engagement. We never asked if that was true.

Did they come back because they wanted to, or because they had to?

I want to question whether my DAU tells me anything real about my app. Don't give me growth tactics or engagement playbooks. Imagine you are one of my users. Ask me what my app does, then ask me: do I come back because I want to, or because I have to? Then help me find the honest answer.
